About ICTE
The International Council for Technical Education is a statutory organisation set up to make India more competitive through the development of its Vocational Skills. It is mandated to plan, coordinate and establish standards and qualifications for the discipline of ICTE
ICTE is, simply, education to prepare people – students, job seekers, the employed and the self-employed – for the world of work and business. Also it includes all programs and courses that contribute towards the development of the knowledge, technical skills, attitudes, and core skills essential to being competitive in the world of work.
FUNCTIONS OF ICTE
Vocational Education and Skill Development is an important element of the nation’s education initiative. In order for Vocational Education to play its part effectively in the changing national context and for India to enjoy the fruits of the demographic dividend, there is an urgent need to redefine the critical elements of imparting vocational education and training to make them flexible, contemporary, relevant, inclusive and creative. The Government is well aware of the important role of Vocational education and has already taken a number of important initiatives in this area.
The primary functions of ICTE will include – recognition and regulation of vocational Training Institutions and Centres, Development and implementation of standards regarding Affiliation/Certification/Accreditation of various Vocational Skill Trades/Courses. And this institutional reform will lead to improvement in quality and market relevance of skill development programs lending credibility to vocational education and training encouraging greater small investment and employer participation in the skills space.
ICTE is particularly important for promoting economic development, expanding employment size and improving the quality of employment. Adoption of new training technology with close involvement of industry and other stakeholders in planning and implementation of training programs.
